The Story of Don Quintin Paredes High School
Every school has a beginning. For Don Quintin Paredes High School, that beginning is a story of change, determination, and a continuing commitment to give young people the opportunity to learn.
The story started in June 1976, when Durian Elementary School and Quirino Elementary School were merged following the directive of the Quezon City Government to have only one public elementary school in each district. This led to the establishment of Flora Ylagan High School – Durian Annex, which eventually became the school we proudly know today as Don Quintin Paredes High School.
In its early years, the school had 346 students, 13 pioneer teachers, and four year levels. The classes were held in ten rented rooms at the Philippine Home Site and Housing Corporation building, where classrooms, vocational classes, and administrative offices were accommodated. The school’s first principal, Mrs. Virginia Cerrudo, led the pioneering educators during these formative years.
In June 1979, the Flora Ylagan High School – Durian Annex officially became Don Quintin Paredes High School, named after the distinguished statesman, lawyer, educator, and nationalist from Bangued, Abra.
The name carried a meaningful purpose. Don Quintin Paredes was known for his advocacy of education and for opening opportunities to those who had been left behind. This spirit became part of the school’s identity—a belief that education can open doors and give every learner a chance to build a better future.
As the number of students continued to grow, the need for a bigger and more suitable school site became increasingly important. Several possibilities were considered, but the plans did not materialize due to concerns about distance and property ownership.
Finally, in 2003, another important chapter began. Don Quintin Paredes High School transferred to a three-storey, 12-room building along Lanzones Street corner Anonas, made possible through the Countryside Development Fund of Congressman Dennis Roldan and donated for the school’s use.
From 346 students and 13 pioneer teachers, DQPHS has grown into a community that has touched the lives of generations of learners, teachers, parents, alumni, and partners.
Today, as we celebrate our 47th Founding Anniversary, we remember the people and the humble beginnings that shaped our school. More importantly, we celebrate the legacy that continues to live through every Quintinian.
Our story began with a small community.
Our journey continues with one purpose.
And our future moves forward together.
